Hey!! Did You Water Your Lawn Today????By Rita Gangwani on Mar 24, 2023
God has his own ways of shaking us up and teaching us the right lessons at the right time. I feel that he has worked with me and on me for all my life correcting my thoughts as and when i am lost. He has helped me in so many ways to become the person I am meant to be and was called to be. He has touched me through experiences, memories, stories, and most of all other people. He has molded me with moments of love and examples of kindness. Punished me when I go astray, guided me through times of joy and sorrow. He has walked with me every step on my journey through life.
I read a beautiful quote sometime back which said,” If the grass is green on the other side…maybe its fake ” , but times have taught me that , ” if the grass is greener on the other side, take care and water your own…. maybe you have neglected it.”
Yes, we all do that sometimes. We crib, cry, compare and complain that we don’t have enough. We keep looking at the grass on the other side without realizing that maybe your neighbor is looking at your grass instead and reflecting the same emotions as you. Being happy doesn’t mean everything is perfect, it means you have decided to look beyond imperfections. We think we know what will make us happy, but we don’t. Many of us believe that money will make us happy, but it won’t. Except for the very poor, money cannot buy happiness. Instead of dreaming of vast wealth, we should dream of healthy bodies, peace and meaningful work.
If you focus your mind to compare your life to other people’s lives you will always find someone new above you. And your self-esteem will take a beating. If you get a nicer car to feel better compared to Mr. so and so next door, you´ll feel satisfied for a while. Six months later you may notice that a friend’s kid around the corner drives in BMW to school with a uniformed chauffer. What happens??? U feels sad about your own new car!! You feel great when you purchased your new car and then you feel bad again when you see that someone else has an even finer car and privileges than you…
A problem with comparing yourself to others and wanting approval from them is that you let others control how you feel in life. No one is ever happy with what they have. There is no end to desires….isn’t it enough that you are Alive, healthy and surrounded by people who love you?? As long as you have food on your plate, roof on your head, healthy body, and peace in your mind…you are RICH!!!People are wedded to the idea that more money will bring them more happiness. The fact is that when they get more money they are going to want even more money. When they get more money, they are going to want a bigger house, car etc. They never have enough money, and what they do is sacrifice their family life and health to get more money. True happiness comes when we learn to be content with what we have.
Reminds me of an incidence when I was walking towards the entrance of a street store and two cars pulled into empty parking spots in front of me. The first was a shiny, new Audi and I felt a twinge when I saw it. “How nice”, I thought, “I must buy one”. The second car was an ancient Maruti. A man hopped out of the Audi, hurried into the store right past a kiosk collecting money for an old age home without a second glance and a shove as they approached him busy laughing into his mobile phone. Out of the old Maruti came a young mother with three small children in tow. Her clothes looked as worn out as her car, yet she stopped in front of the old age kiosk on her own, smiled, opened her purse, and dropped a ten rupee note in their box. I stood there for a minute in astonishment while God spent another moment working on my heart, soul, and mind. “Maybe”, I thought to myself, “It’s better to be rich on the inside instead of the outside.” In that second warmth touched me, all the feelings of comparisons and complaints left me, and all the love and joy that is life filled me.
Many people look outside themselves for fulfillment; they expect to … But true happiness comes from within. If you let go a little you will have a little happiness. “If you let go a lot you will have a lot of happiness. If you let go completely you will be free.” Says –Ajahn Chah
